Class Descriptions

18-Hour First Aid/CPR
This class is designed for people in construction and heavy industry, those with limited access to emergency services. First Aid and CPR certification are valid for two years. Text required, review prior to start of class.

Adult Learning

Assessment of Learning
The learner-instructor will demonstrate assessment literacy and will design and develop assessments to be integrated into the learning process, including performance-based and portfolio assessments. These assessments-prior assessments, formative assessment, summative assessment, global assessment-will be linked directly to clearly developed learning outcomes and will inform the process of curriculum evaluation and revision.

Developing and Reviewing Programs
Create, review and/or modify program plans and approve core and support program coursework and assessments working with program advisory committee and accreditation standards. Instructors will identify other college programs and institutions for collaborative work. They will also research and implement current industry standards and trends.

Distance Learning

History and Philosophy of Professional-Technical Education
The learner-instructor will survey the important pieces of current legislation impacting professional technical education; the educational philosophies of Dewey, Prosser, Classical American Pragmatism and the learning theory Constructivism; write a personal philosophy of professional-technical education and demonstrate its practical use and application to current and future teaching.

Information Literacy

Manage Learning Environments
The learner-instructor will manage a learning environment by obtaining, setting up, and maintaining required equipment, systems, tools, supplies, and materials; develop a growth and replacement plan for systems, equipment, and/or tools; supervise, evaluate, and monitor the safety of the instructional areas and practices.

Master Advisor I
Master Advisory class provides faculty and staff with the core skills necessary to advise students toward the successful completion of their certificate or degree program. Topics include transcript evaluation, interpreting assessment, prerequisites, program, technical, and general education requirements, developing an educational plan, etc.

Planning for Instruction-Curriculum Development
Instructor-learners plan for the delivery of adult instruction by:
" Developing the skills required to create, evaluate or modify a program/course through the construction of initial course outlines and syllabi.
" Developing the skills required to satisfactorily submit and achieve approval of newly created and/or modified programs/courses.
" Identifying current and relevant program textbooks, instructional media, and resources.
" Developing an assessment for a learning outcome.
" Creating instructional materials appropriate for students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles.

Teaching and Facilitating Learning I
Teachers will begin or expand their training as a skilled professional-technical educator in this introduction to teaching at the community college. Sometimes described as a "survival course", this course will help new or nearly new instructor-learners to establish themselves as effective instructional leaders, communicators and facilitators in the professional-technical classroom or laboratory setting. New instructors/learners will practice implementing a variety of instructional strategies and student assessments to meet course outcomes. Focus is on lecture, discussion, demonstration, and small group work and ways in which instructors act as facilitators of learning in their classrooms. Instructors/learners will actively practice their teaching skills to begin to implement learner-centered instructional activities and lessons that they have devised.

Teaching and Facilitating Learning II
Instructor-learners will continue to fine tune multiple modes of instruction beyond those in Level I including class discussion, case studies, role plays, and student self-assessment. They will further develop model lessons and apply facilitation and instructional delivery skills and deepen understanding of how students learn. Further focus will be on preparing instructor-learners to be facilitators as well as dynamic presenters and self-assessing their own effectiveness.
