Faculty Biographies
Ben Taves
Ben Taves started teaching welding at Lake Washington Technical College in 2001. Previously, he taught welding for eight years at a vocational school in upstate New York. He owned and operated a welding shop, where he did general welding and fabricating, technical work on expensive classic car restorations, as well as designing and building fine art metal sculpture. Ben is a welding industry consultant and reviews and edits textbooks for several publishers. In years past, he also owned and operated a construction company.
Ben taught at the State University College at Oswego, New York, from 1977 through 1980. This college is a four-year college renowned for training shop and technology teachers. His education includes completing course work in welding and automotive technology at Morrisville Ag & Tech, and Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from Oswego. He is an American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Instructor, Certified Welding Educator, and a Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO) Welding Inspector. Ben is also a WABO Certified Welder.
Michael Hayes
Michael Hayes has been teaching evening classes at Lake Washington Technical College since 2002. He worked at Boeing and several other companies, welding aerospace related products, and at Todd Pacific Shipyard, welding everything from structural to pipe. Mike is currently a welding inspector at Todd Pacific Shipyard.
Mike completed course work in the welding program at Renton Technical College and is an AWS Certified Welding Inspector, a WABO Inspector, and a WABO Certified Welder.
